SURAH AL-QADR (CHAPTER-97)

REVEALED IN MAKKAH

UNDERSTANDING

BISMILLAH HIRRAHMA NIRRAHIM

 

This is the 97^th Chapter of the Holy Quran and was revealed in MAKKAH hence is called as MAKKI SURAT. It is having 5 verses.

إِنَّآ أَنزَلْنَـٰهُ فِى لَيْلَةِ ٱلْقَدْرِ ١

وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا لَيْلَةُ ٱلْقَدْرِ ٢

لَيْلَةُ ٱلْقَدْرِ خَيْرٌۭ مِّنْ أَلْفِ شَهْرٍۢ ٣

تَنَزَّلُ ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ وَٱلرُّوحُ فِيهَا بِإِذْنِ رَبِّهِم مِّن كُلِّ أَمْرٍۢ ٤

سَلَـٰمٌ هِىَ حَتَّىٰ مَطْلَعِ ٱلْفَجْرِ ٥

The FIRST verse “INNA ANZALNAHU FEE LAYLATIL QADR”. In this the first word “INNA” means “INDEED”, word “ANZALNAHU” means “WE SENT IT DOWN” with “HU” refers to the holy Quran . The word “FEE” means “DURING or IN” . Than the phrase “LAYLATIL QADR “means the night which is “MOST POWERFUL, IMPORTANT, THE NIGHT OF DESTINY”. Hence the understanding from the first verse is , Almighty Allah has sent these verses of Quran during this night which is most powerful, the night in which the destiny is decided . Than what all the acts to be done on this night so that the prayers will be accepted and answered. All these things comes in the next verses.

 

The SECOND verse “WAMA ADRAKA MA LAYLATUL QADR”. In this verse “WA” means “AND” and “MA” means “WHAT” with that “ADRAKA” means “MAKE YOU KNOW”. This kind of phrase is always used for an event of “HIGH IMPORTANCE, GREATNESS, and UNIMAGINABLE NATURE”. Hence this verse attach a very high importance with the previous verse that is the night of “LAYLATIL QADR”. This said that people are basically not aware with the importance of the night .

 

The THIRD verse is “ LAYLATUL QADR KHAIRUM MIN AL FEE SHAHR” . This means that the night of “QADR” is better than “THOUSAND MONTHS”, here word “MIN” means “THAN”. “FEE SHAHR” means “THOUSAND MONTHS”. It means that this particular night contains much more blessings and power than thousands months of worship.

 

The fourth verse is “TANAZZALUL MALAIKATU WARROOHO FEEHA BEIZNI RABBEHIM MINKULLI AMR”.  In this the word “TANAZZALUL” means “DESCEND”, “MALAIKATU” and WARRUHO" means “ANGELS and HOLY SPIRIT”. Angels here signifies “FARISHTEY and HOLY SPIRIT” refers to “HAZRAT JIBREEL AMEEN (AS)”. “FEEHA BEIZNI RABBEHIM “ means and “IN THIS NIGHT, BY THE PERMISSION of ALMIGHTY ALLAH”. “MIN KULLI AMR” means “WITH ALL MATTERS or FOR ALL MATTERS” Hence this verse signifies that in this holy night Angels and Spirits descend with the permission of their lord for all the affairs which are to be decided. Now the question is for whom. Simple answer is for those who prays, repents and do good deeds. All such deeds will me noticed and the future events will be decided.

 

The last and the FIFTH Verse is “ SALAMUN HIYAHATTA MATLAIL FAJR”. In this “SALAMUN” refers to peace and safety, “HIYA HATTA MATLAIL FAJR” means “IT IS UNTILL THE RISING OF SUN/DAWN”. This means that there is Peace and Blessing in this night till the dawn.

 

DATE OF AL-QADR

The most important narration in this respect comes from HAZRAT AISHA (RA). Hazrat Aisha (RA) said that the Prophet ( SAW) told to search the night of blessing in the last ten nights of Ramzan. The same is recorded in Sahih Bukhari.

Hazrat Ibn Umar (RA) said that according to the prophet SAW the blessed night is among the odd nights in last ten days of Ramzan i.e. 21,23,25,27 and 29^th of Ramzan. This also is recorded in Sahih Bukhari.

Overall the last 10 days of Ramzan are be honoured and observed in search of this blessed night.
