SURAH AL-FALAQ(UNDERSTANDING)

SURAH AL-FALAQ (UNDERSTANDING)

Chapter 113

(Breaking Of Dawn)

Bismillah Hirrahman Nirrahim

This is 113th chapter of the holy Quran and was revealed in Madeena and contains 5 verses.

The verses were revealed on the holy prophet (SAW) on account of magic done on him which let his health deteriorated. On the basis of knowledge gained from the records of SAHABA mainly from MUSNAD of AHMAD and as recorded in SAHIH BUKHARI described by HAZRAT AISHA (RA) that a Jewish man has done certain magic on the holy prophet by getting some of his hairs and tying knots in them and then buried them at the base of a tree in a well. The verses were revealed as a cure from such bad intentions which includes magic, jealousy and other evils.

Now the first VERSE “QUL AUZO BI RABBIL FALAQ” means to Say that I seek refuge from the lord of day break against the darkness. Here word FALAQ used for daybreak, refuge or protection is sought from the almighty Allah against the evils of the darkness i.e. evils done at the night time. Most of the bad deeds including magic, robberies etc. are being done in the darkness of night. And as the day breaks it spreads over the darkness and also on the evils performed during the night time.

Second VERSE “MIN SHARRIMA KHALAQ” means that refuge is also sought from the evils of everything created by the Almighty. Word SHAR here signifies evil. Hence refuge is sought against every evil deed from the Almighty Allah. But especially refuge is sought in three special cases as are described in next three VERSES.

Third VERSE is “WA MIN SHARRE GHASIQIN ISA WAQAB” , here words GHASIQIN originates from word GHASAQ which means “ to become dark “ and word WAQAB comes from WUQUB which means “ Total Darkness or Utter Darkness”. Hence refuge is sought from the darkness of night and against all evil deeds done during these dark times i.e. at night times.

Fourth VERSE is “WA MIN SHARRIN NAFFASATI FIL UQAD”, here word NAFFASATI originates from word NAFTH which means to blow over something and UQAD comes from word UQADAH which means “a knot”. In totality the refuge here is sought from those who perform magic by tying knots in something and blowing over it. This has significance in the incident which happened with the holy prophet (SAW). Actually the Jew who performed magic over him has obtained certain hair strands of him, tied knots in them and then blew something over it. Hence in this verse refuge is sought from such an evil act. Here point to be noted in this verse is that it is pointed out that refuge is specially sought against magic performed by women , this might be because it is known from the writings of SAHAB that the Jewish man who did the magic on the prophet (SAW) has taken help of his daughters in this act.

Fifth VERSE is “WA MIN SHARRIN HASIDIN ISA HASAD”, in this verse the refuge is sought against those who are jealous of others due to the good attributes and fortunes awarded by the Almighty Allah to them. Jealousy is a major sin , it was the first sin committed in HEAVEN as the Satan was jealous of Hazrat Adam(AS) and on the earth Hazrat Adam’s (AS) son QABIL was jealous of his brother HABIL.

Hence to conclude it must be understood that this Surah awarded not only general protection against evils of all kinds but special protection against three things.

1.    Evil of Darkness and misdeeds done at these times.

2.    Evil of Magicians.

3.    Evil of Jealousy.

Hazrat Mohammad (SAW) used to recite this SURAH blew it over his hands and spreads over full body. Hence at the time of such grieves including health issues, Troubles, Distress, Injuries etc. this SURAH must be recited with SURAH AN-NAS. In Sha Allah the Almighty Allah provide cures against all such things.

Allah Knows The Best.
