SURAH AL-FALAQ(UNDERSTANDING)

SURAH AL-FALAQ (UNDERSTANDING)

Chapter 113

(Breaking Of Dawn)

Bismillah Hirrahman Nirrahim

This is 113th chapter of the holy Quran and was revealed in Madeena and contains 5 verses.

The verses were revealed on the holy prophet (SAW) on account of magic done on him which let his health deteriorated. On the basis of knowledge gained from the records of SAHABA mainly from MUSNAD of AHMAD and as recorded in SAHIH BUKHARI described by HAZRAT AISHA (RA) that a Jewish man has done certain magic on the holy prophet by getting some of his hairs and tying knots in them and then buried them at the base of a tree in a well. The verses were revealed as a cure from such bad intentions which includes magic, jealousy and other evils.

Now the first VERSE “QUL AUZO BI RABBIL FALAQ” means to Say that I seek refuge from the lord of day break against the darkness. Here word FALAQ used for daybreak, refuge or protection is sought from the almighty Allah against the evils of the darkness i.e. evils done at the night time. Most of the bad deeds including magic, robberies etc. are being done in the darkness of night. And as the day breaks it spreads over the darkness and also on the evils performed during the night time.

Second VERSE “MIN SHARRIMA KHALAQ” means that refuge is also sought from the evils of everything created by the Almighty. Word SHAR here signifies evil. Hence refuge is sought against every evil deed from the Almighty Allah. But especially refuge is sought in three special cases as are described in next three VERSES.

Third VERSE is “WA MIN SHARRE GHASIQIN ISA WAQAB” , here words GHASIQIN originates from word GHASAQ which means “ to become dark “ and word WAQAB comes from WUQUB which means “ Total Darkness or Utter Darkness”. Hence refuge is sought from the darkness of night and against all evil deeds done during these dark times i.e. at night times.

Fourth VERSE is “WA MIN SHARRIN NAFFASATI FIL UQAD”, here word NAFFASATI originates from word NAFTH which means to blow over something and UQAD comes from word UQADAH which means “a knot”. In totality the refuge here is sought from those who perform magic by tying knots in something and blowing over it. This has significance in the incident which happened with the holy prophet (SAW). Actually the Jew who performed magic over him has obtained certain hair strands of him, tied knots in them and then blew something over it. Hence in this verse refuge is sought from such an evil act. Here point to be noted in this verse is that it is pointed out that refuge is specially sought against magic performed by women , this might be because it is known from the writings of SAHAB that the Jewish man who did the magic on the prophet (SAW) has taken help of his daughters in this act.

Fifth VERSE is “WA MIN SHARRIN HASIDIN ISA HASAD”, in this verse the refuge is sought against those who are jealous of others due to the good attributes and fortunes awarded by the Almighty Allah to them. Jealousy is a major sin , it was the first sin committed in HEAVEN as the Satan was jealous of Hazrat Adam(AS) and on the earth Hazrat Adam’s (AS) son QABIL was jealous of his brother HABIL.

Hence to conclude it must be understood that this Surah awarded not only general protection against evils of all kinds but special protection against three things.

1.    Evil of Darkness and misdeeds done at these times.

2.    Evil of Magicians.

3.    Evil of Jealousy.

Hazrat Mohammad (SAW) used to recite this SURAH blew it over his hands and spreads over full body. Hence at the time of such grieves including health issues, Troubles, Distress, Injuries etc. this SURAH must be recited with SURAH AN-NAS. In Sha Allah the Almighty Allah provide cures against all such things.

Allah Knows The Best.

SURAH AL-TAKATHUR(COMPETITION IN ACCUMULATION)

BISMILLAH HIRRAHMAN NIRRAHIM

SURAH AL-TAKATHUR

UNDERSTANDING

SURAH is 102nd Surah of Holy Quran. It has 8 verses, was revealed in MAKKAH. As the name suggest this surah mainly talks about those who indulge themselves in an unworthy competition of amassing worldly pleasures.

The first Verse "ALHAKOMOTTAKA SURO" means that , People are distracted while engaged themselves in mutual competition towards amassing worldly pleasures including money, children, position etc. They started taking pride in amassing more and more materialistic things than their fellow beings.

The second verse " HATTA ZURTUMUL MAQABIR" means that the people engaged themselves in the above race to the extent until they reaches their graves. And till than they become ignorant of the hereafter and never thought about the life after death and never prepared for that.

The third and the fourth Verse " KALLA SAUFA TAALAMOONA", "SUMMA KALLA SAUFA TAALAMOON" gives a warning to these people that very soon they will come to know about the reality . Again in the fourth verse Almighty Allah inferences on the warning that surely these people will come to know about the truth very soon. The truth which is being talked about here is the fact that the amassed materialistic things will not going to help them in the hereafter other than those which was utilized by them justly and which was given in charity.

The Fifth Verse "KALLA LAU TAALAMOONA ILMAL YAQEEN" says that if these people have knowledge about the accountability on the day of judgement associated with accumulation of such worldly things they would never have indulged themselves in such doings. It clearly warns people not to get distracted by this useless competition and be obedient towards the duties assigned by the holy Quran.

The Sixth Verse "LATARAVUNNAL JAHEEM" throws strict warning that such kind of people will surely see the hell and will enter into it .

The Seventh Verse" SUMMA LATARAVUNNAHA AIYNAL YAQEEN" means that on the day of judgement people will see the deeds committed by them during their life time with open eyes. With reference to this very surah it signifies that people who accumulated the worldly things discussed in this surah will see all such accumulations earned owing to the competitions with others.

The last Eighth Verse " SUMMA LATUS ALUNNA YAUMAIZIN ANIN NAEEM" means and than when they sees all their doings they will be questioned for the rightful or wrongful utilization of these things . They will be asked whether they were grateful to the Almighty for the things given to them and utilized them in the rightful way i.e. fulfilling their obligatory commandments, offered charity, helped poor and orphans etc.

Allah Knows the Best.

SURAH AL-MAUN(SMALL GIFT)-UNDERSTANDING

                                         BISMILLAH HIRRAHMAN NIRRAHIM

  SURAH AL-MAUN

This surah is 107th surah(chapter) of Holy Quran with 7 Verses. It was revealed in MAKKAH. Surah means "Small Gifts".

UNDERSTANDING

This Surah contains 7 Verses. First Verse "ARAAYTAL LAZI YUKAZZIBU BIDDIN" basically tells about the characteristics of those who denounces the day of judgement . Hence it is mainly pointing towards the non believers but at the same time the acts described in the verses even if committed by believers are also sinful. Literally the verse meant "have you not seen those who denounced the day of judgement" further the surah tells about the characteristics of such people.

The next verse " FAZALIKAL LAZI YADO UL YATEEM" means the first characteristic of such people is that they are those who oppress and insult the orphans.

Further the next verse "WALA YA HUZZO ALA TAAMIL MISKEEN" signifies the other characteristic that such people are those who do not feed the poor even if they have enough given by the almighty.

Now from verse no 4 to 7 the focus shifted  to believers mainly. Verse no 4 to 6 mainly describes the issue with those believers who performs their salah only to show others.

The next verse "FAWAYLULLIL MUSALLEENAL LAZEENA HUM AN SALATEHIM SAHOON, AL LAZEENA HUM YURAOON" target those believers who use to perform their salah carelessly, neglectfully mainly publicly to showoff but don't have any respect for it in their hearts. The verse says that such person is a hypocrite and such deeds will not help him in the hereafter.

The last verse "WA YAMNAOONAL MAAOON" tells about a characteristic of people described in the previous verse, it says that these are those people who even will not give/share small of their things with others. They are small hearted people.

Some commentators of The Holy Quran considers MAUN in terms of ZAKAAT. We can understand from this that those who are so narrow minded that they are not willing to share even small things with others like their neighbors etc. will never pay ZAKAT which is a legal obligation to them.

SURAH AL-FATIHA(Understanding)

Bismillah Hirrahma Nirrahim

Surah Fatiha(The Opening) is one of the most important Surah of the Quran, Quran begins with it and NAMAZ also begins with it.As all the RAKAH in NAMAZ starts with SURAH-FATIHA it is very important to understand the meanings and to have understanding related to the SURAH. Some of the important features of the SURAH are required to be discussed before going into detailed understanding. These features are-

1.SURAH-FATIHA revealed in MAKKA and contains 7 VERSES and 1 RUKU.

2.This is the first SURAH revealed fully(Complete Revelation).

3.Huzoor SAW said that there is no other SURAH like this.SURAH FATIHA is recited at the beginning of every RAKAH/SURAH there is some important property attached to this. This SURAH is a summary of whole QURAN.

4.This SURAH is also called as SURAH-SHIFA as Huzoor SAW said that this SURAH is the treatment for diseases.

Surah starts with VERSE "BISMILLAH HIRRAHMA NIRRAHIM", here word "BISMILLAH" contains three parts in itself.

First part is the word "BA" which can be used for three different meanings-

1.When one thing is attached to another.

2.Taking help from some other thing.

3.Getting blessings from some thing.

Second part is "ISM" which is used for name. Third part is "ALLAH" which is the most beautiful name of almighty and a name with no plurals as there is no one alike.Hence "BISMILLAH" may have three different meanings which are "With the name of ALLAH", "With help of ALLAH","With blessings of ALLAH".

Words "RAHMAN" means the one whose blessings or Grace spreads all over i.e. whose blessings are omnipresence. Word "RAHEEM" here signifies the one whose blessings and grace is complete. Hence "BISMILLAH HIRRAHMA NIRRAHIM" signifies "With the name of Allah SWT whose blessings/grace spreads all over and is complete".

Second VERSE of the SURAH is "AL-HAMDULILLAHI RABBIL AALAMEEN" where "AL-HAMDULILLAH" means all praise is due for Allah SWT, word "RABB" means the one who sustains and nurtures, "AALAMEEN" is the plural for "ALAM" which means WORLD,UNIVERSE.Hence the second VERSE in total said that "All praise is due for ALLAH SWT who is the nurturer of all the kingdoms, worlds(Humans,Birds,Sun,Moon,Sky,Angels,Wind,Water Etc). This also includes any other set of things present in the sky beyond the cognizance of humans.

Third VERSE is "ARRAHMA NIRRAHIM", its meanings have already been explained above.

Fourth VERSE is "MAALIK YAUMIDDIN", in this word "MAALIK" comes from the root arabic word "MILK" which means the one who holds or possesses a thing so that he has full control over its affairs(Managing and disposing). Words "YAUM" is used for "DAY"."DIN" used for the "COMING BACK". In total this verse said that "Allah is the master of the day of resurrection".

Fifth VERSE is "EEYAKA NAABUDU WA EEYAKA NASTAEEN" means that "O Allah you only we worship and seeking help from". As it is clear from the above VERSES that Allah SWT has complete authority over all the affairs of this world and the hereafter hence one should always seek guidance from ALLAH SWT which is clearly given in the holy QURAN and through the deeds of Holy Prophet(SAW)(Sunnats).

Sixth VERSE "IHDI NASSIRATAL MUSTAQEEM" means "O Allah kindly guide us to the straight path". We seek help from you , straight path is the path which leads to a person to his goal. This goal is to be successful in the hereafter.

Seventh VERSE is "SIRATALLAZEENA ANAMTA ALAYHIM GHAYRIL MAGHZOOBI ALAYHIM WALDWALLEEN" , again its a prayer to the Allah SWT that kindly guide us to that staright path which your obidient beleivers followed who recieved your favors and not on the path of those who attracted you anger. Here the straight path talked about is the path given in the holy QURAN and the PROPHET's(SAW)sayings and way of living. Here is a prayer to almighty ALLAH that kindly guide us to this straight path of QURAN and HADITH which leads us to acquire TAQWA and AKHLAQ(Good Manners).

It concludes the understanding part of the SURAH AL FATIHA. And if we analyze it we see that first 3 VERSES contains praise for the almighty by explaining the attributes which can't be possessed by anyone else. 4th VERSE has both elements of praise and prayer in it. Last 3 VERSES contains a prayer that O Allah SWT you are the master of everything so we seek guidance from none other but you so that we will be successful in this life and hereafter.

BEBASI(Short Story)

RAMADAN/RAMZAAN (QURANIC REFERENCE AND UNDERSTANDING)

RAMADAN

    BISMILLAH HIRRAHMAN NIRRAHIM

Asslamoalaikum,as we all know that the month of Ramadan is fast approaching , we must be thankful to the almighty for giving us another opportunity of seeking Blessings(Rehmat),Forgiveness(Maghfirat) and Nijaat(Safety from the hell fire) . On this account i would like to share with all of you references regarding month of Ramadana/Sawm mentioned in the holy Quran and the related Hadith with understanding of the same gathered from some sources so that it will benefit all of us . Beyond doubt only Allah knows the best and I don't have either the capability of explaining nor have the effectiveness. May the almighty impart  effectiveness to this article.

FIRST REFERENCE

SURAH AL-BAQARAH, VERSE NO.183

First Reference to the activity of Self Restraint is mentioned in SURAH AL-BAQRAH,SURAH NO.2 and VERSE NO.183. Allah SWT in this verse interacting with the beleivers through the words" YA AYYOHAL LAZEENA AAMANU" .Allah SWT said that the Activity of Self Restrain/ Righteousness has been made a compulsion for you and this message has been given with the word "SAWM" which literally means to stop or to restrain. Allah SWT also said that this activity is not a new one the similar custom was also bestowed on the people came before you , words "Min Qablekum" means people came before you hence this is not a new activity. Now Allah SWT said that this has been made a compulsion so that you acquire TAQWA(Self Restrain) and this has been clearly explained by Words "LALLAKUM TATTAQQUN" means that the month of SAWM is to be observed for acquiring Self Restrain. So this first reference to the month of Ramadan clearly explained the purpose for which the Holy Month was given to us. And this purpose is to acquire "TAQWA" which means consciousness of Allah SWT and full devotion towards the almighty by obeying the commandments and restraining from the prohibited activities mentioned in the HOLY QURAN ("ZALIKAL KITABU LARAIBAFI") which means the book beyond doubt. This can only be fulfilled when our heart started observing SAWM which ultimately leads to our actions. Following are some etiquette of Ramadan , Jazakallah Khair , May Allah SWT bless all of those who helped in spread message of peace through all available mediums.

                                                        SECOND REFERENCE

                                SURAH AL-BAQARAH, VERSE NO.184

It is given in SURAH NO.2 (SURAH AL-BAQARAH) VERSE NO.184.

It started with the words "AYYAMAM MAADOODAAT" which means these are the few days . Now in this there is a difference of opinions among the scholars as some scholars said that this reference of few days is for the full month of observing SAWM i.e. RAMZAN on the other hand some scholars are of the opinion that this reference is basically used for those 3 days fast which huzoor SAW(PBUH) used to observe after migration to Madinah and one he(PBUH) used to observe for 10th Moharram(Ashurah). But if we refer AYAT No. 203 of SURAH BAQARAH where again the word "AYYAMAM  MAADOODAATIN" is used for those few days of ZIL HAJJ(9th to 13th) when a HAJI stays at MINA.Also upto Ayat no. 184 a clear ruling regarding observing fasts for a full month has not revealed. It only revealed with AYAT NO. 185. By this it is somewhat clear that "AYYAMAM MAADOODAT" in AYAT NO 184 is used for those 4 days fast which Huzoor SAW (PBUH) used to observe(Allah knows the best).

Further Almighty Allah SWT explained that which are the set of people exempted from this exercise of SAWM. Following are the people who are exempted.

1."FAMAN KANA MINKUM MAREEZAN", these words means those who are sick/ill due to some ailment who may face unbearable pain or there are chances that ailment/sickness will increase due to observing fast .

2."AU ALA SAFRIN", this means that a person who is out of the city traveling for some unavoidable reasons is also exempted but this travel doesn't include just simple movement but movement up to an acceptable distance which on the basis of sayings of the prophet(PBUH),Sahaba and Jurists derived to be 48 Miles(Allah Knows the Best),  If a person intended to stay at one place during his travel than it doesn't comes under the purview of "ALA SAFRIN" and the rules of exemption will not come into force , the acceptable derived duration for this on the basis of sayings of Prophet(PBUH), Sahaba and Jurists is 15 days. But if a perosn intends to travel to different places by making stay for smaller duration than he will be considered with in the meaning of "Ala Safrin" and hence he will be exempted(Allah Knows the best).

Now the words "FA IDDATUM MIN AYYAMIN UKHR" means that those exempted from observing fasts mentioned in above point no. 1 and 2 must observe the fasts which is VAJIB afer getting healthy or completion of travel. This is VAJIB only if an unhealthy person or a traveler gets that much lifetime after getting healthy or completing his journey ,

Another point discussed in this AYAT is "WA ALLAZEENA YUTIQUNAHU" which explains that for those who are not falling in the category of sick persons or travelers but due to some other reasons not able to observe fasts, they may give FIDAYA or SADAQA i.e. feeding poors and needies as a replacement but at the same time by saying "WA ANTASUMU KHAIRULLAKUM" Allah SWT said that better for you is to observe SAWM. FIDAYA for one FAST/ROZA is equivalent to about price of 2.30 Kgs of wheat in modern times.

THIRD REFERENCE

SURAH AL-BAQARAH, VERSE NO.185

In this AYAT Allah SWT clearly revealed that the month in which the QURAN is revealed is the month of RAMZAN and this QURAN is the guidance for those who wanted to travel on righteous path. Who wanted to differentiate between Right and Wrong. So whoever gets this month will surely observe path of SAWM. Again Allah SWT repeated the thing already explained in AYAT NO 184 regarding exemption given to Sick and Travelers. Allah said that Allah doesn't wants to put believers in difficulty but to give ease as is given to exempted set of people who can cover up for left out FASTS after getting healthy or completing journey. So it is duty of believers to praise the almighty who has shown righteous path to them. Allah SWT has clearly indicated that those who got this month of RAMZAN must observe fasting with this the earlier relaxation of giving FIDAYA in place of fast has been withdrawn. Also by the words "SHAHEDA MINKUMUSHHAHRA" which means present in the month actually means those who got this month in his/her proper senses i.e. this doesn't include the ones who are Mentally Challenged, Non Adults, Menstruating Women, Non Believers , must observe fast.

FOURTH REFERENCE

SURAH AL-BAQARAH, VERSE NO.187

This ayat starts with words "UHILLA LAKUM" which means that (This is made righteous for you/HALAL) , it clearly indicated that something which was not HALAL/not practiced earlier is made HALAL . Here this refers to the act of indulging in sexual relations with wife and eating and drinking. Before this it is only up to the limit a believer falls asleep that he was allowed to meet and getting involved in close relations/Sexual relations with his wife and also only allowed to eat and drink up to the moment he gets sleep. But with this revelation this barrier has been lifted and now believers are allowed to eat, drink and be in intimate relationship with their wives till morning(start of fasting). Although the previous ruling of not eating and being in intimate relationship with wives is not evident from QURAN but it was a practice followed by SAHABA(RA) on the basis of instructions given by HUZOOR(PBUH). But QURAN has clarified this through this AYAT. One more important ruling given in this ayat is related to ETIKAAF(Which literally means staying). When a believer choose to stay in the mosque for the purpose of IBADAT than he will be restricted to observe intimacy with his wife.

Allah SWT said " TILKA HUDOODULLAHE FALA TAQRABOOHA" which means these are the limits set by Almighty Allah so don't go even near to them.Hence with revelation of this verse Allah SWT has clearly sets the limits for which a believer has to restrain himself from acts of Eating,Sexual Relations,Bad Habits. This is from Dawn to Sunset.

REFERENCES FROM HADITH(SAYINGS OF PROPHET(SAW)) NARRATED BY SAHABAS (COMPANIONS).

1.Allah's apostle said that Fasting is a shield, hence a person who is fasting should avoid being disrespectful and behaving foolishly.A believer must also avoid having sexual relationships during fasting(HAZRAT ABU HURAIRAH).

2.Allah's apostle said that "all the deeds of a person is for himself/herself but fasting is for Allah SWT and hence ALLAH SWT will reward him as he has left eating , drinking and desires for ALLAH'S sake, and the reward for good deeds will be multiplied by 10 times (HAZRAT ABU HURAIRAH).

3.Allah's apostle said that the smell coming out of the month of a fasting person is better than the smell of musk (HAZRAT ABU HURAIRAH).

4.Allah's apostle said when the month of Ramadan begins the gates of Heaven are opened and the gates of Hell are closed and the devil is chained (HAZRAT ABU HURAIRAH).

5.Allah's apostle said that whoever observe SAWM/FAST during month of Ramadan and whoever prays on the night of qadr out of sincere faith all his previous sins will be forgiven (HAZRAT ABU HURAIRAH).

6.Allah's apostle said that whoever has not give up forged speech and evil actions , Allah will not be in need of his leaving food and drink.Such fast will not be accepted(HAZRAT ABU HURAIRAH).

7.Allah's apostle said that the lag between the SUHUR meals and FAJR prayer will be that much in which 50 verses of QURAN can be recited(HAZRAT ANAS).

8.Allah's apostle said whoever performs any of the good deeds shall receive the same reward as obligatory deeds and whoever performs obligatory deeds will get a reward 70 times higher(IBN KHUZAYMAH).

9.Allah's apostle said take suhur meal as there is blessing in it (ANAS BIN MALIK).

DISCUSSIONS

1.RAMZAAN/RAMADAN:RAMADAN originated from the word "RAMAD" which means intensly heated by sun. With reference to RAMADAN this means burning of sins.It can be seen in the HADITH no.5 above, that if a person observes SAWM during RAMADAN with sincere faith all of his previous sins will be burnt(forgiven). Also this is the only Islamic month name given by Quran(SURAH AL-BAQARAH, VERSE NO. 185).

2.SUHOOR:SUHUR literally means "OF THE DAWN" i.e. meal of the dawn. It can be seen from the HADITH NO.9 above that Allah's Messenger(PBUH) has given importance to this meal.
